Notes about Dunwich Heath- I painted this landscape because it is a beautiful rare and fragile survival area of coastal lowland heath, a precious part of our coastline which is particularly susceptible to erosion and loss. With severe weather patterns in recent years it could disappear entirely.
I wanted to capture its peaceful solitude conjuring the buzz of bees and the sound of the waves, if only on paper and in your imagination before it is gone.
Nearby is the beautiful nature reserve of RSPB Minsmere, featuring bird hides with woods and wetlands.
The lost city of Dunwich once matched the size and importance of London in the 14th century, it was destroyed during a series of fierce storms from 1328 to 1362 sweeping 400+ homes into the sea.
